Be aware that wifi hookup may not be easy as school wifi won't have an easy option for connecting non-popular devices. Everything connected needs to be authenticated so they know who is using the network. Makes sure you can send via bluetooth from a phone. My son has the KEF LSX II. They sound great for the size and price but he is limited to bluetooth only in his dorm room. Someone mentioned Sonos Play 1...we have a Play 5 and couldn't get it to work as it must have internet.
Looking for an all-in-one just-add-speakers streamer for my son to take to college
Cambridge Audio Evo 75 is probably the top of the range, but maybe a BlueSound Powernode is good enough? Maybe there is something cheaper that fits the bill?
My son is not (yet) an audiophile, so sufficient volume may be the most important, but interested in any thoughts folks have on this topic.

Dorm rooms and campus apartments will have lots of people in and out, roommates, their friends, maintenance people. In that use case, something small and not too flashy. Maybe something used. Whatever it is will be moved and moved again, so nothing precious, it will get knocked around. Even if in a personal apartment, he will be in a peripatetic phase of life and the same requirements will apply. Inexpensive actives with a bluetooth streamer-DAC and maybe an input in the back--Wiim Pro Plus--would be an option. A bluetooth wireless Sonos active. He'll have plenty of time to buy something bigger and better later on when he's spending his own money.

Look at the self powered Vanatoo speakers. Worked well in my son’s dorm and they are blue tooth capable so he just used his phone or a USB from his computer. Simple and had excellent sound. The Vanatoo Zeros or Model One depending on size needed. I have a pair of the Vanatoo One’s on my desk at home that I also enjoy. (They have a built in compressor you can turn off for best sound quality, but when on it acts as protection against being turned up to loud in a dorm room by accident 😬) |
