What a voice

Frankie Laine who recently died at age 93 was a man whose music I have never heard...until NPR played part of a song.

Although I am more drawn to the female voice, what little I heard of Mr. Laine stopped me in my tracks. A voice like buttah.

Same here. The only song I knew from him was the theme from the TV series Rawhide (showing my age here). Completely different from that cut on NPR. I had the same reaction. What a voice! I was driving around doing errands and it stopped me, too.
Funny thing, last Sunday I was just pulling vinyl and listening to various LPs and I played Frankie Laine's hits. On Tuesday he died. Just a lucky appreciation of a great voice before he left us.
frankie laine and gene pitney both had unique pipes. frankie sang the theme to 'blazzing saddles' (poking fun at his own legacy.
Frankie Laine had a really good voice, for sure, but his delivery (phrasing, emphasis) made him a stand out to me. I feel the same way about Bobby Darin and Gladys Knight. Frankie Laine's hits are timeless gems...have a listen to "That Lucky Old Sun," "Jezebel," "I Believe," and "Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling" and you'll readily appreciate his talent.
