Here's my "thinking outside of the box" tuner recommendation:
Buy a Tivoli PAL portable radio! It is a great radio with a rechargable battery. You can use it outside for picnics, poolside, etc., and because it's rechargable, the battery is always good and it's great to have in case of an emergency power outage. It is a mono radio with a decent built-in speaker.
As a tuner, it has an external 1/8" stereo RCA plug so you can stick a 1/8" stereo to dual RCA adaper (Available at radio shack) into it and connect a pair of stereo RCA interconnect cables. In this setup, the tuner is stereo and it outputs nice stereo sound.
I love my PAL. Its a fine little affordable portable, weather resistant radio and it makes a decent am/fm tuner too.
BTW, I'm not old school, I'm odd school......
Enjoy,
TIC
