Ultrasonic record cleaners
When I got back into vinyl a few years ago (and so glad I did) I broke down and purchased a Vevor 6L ultrasonic cleaning machine directly from them on sale Less then $200 and we’ll worth it! Years ago I had the upper level Nitty Gritty machines an...
Are Their any Tube Preamp with Home Theater Bypass?
The Cary Audio Design SLP-05 preamp has a perfect HT Bypass.  When switched to HT Bypass the incoming signal only travels through a couple relays and back out the jacks.  So no active circuitry in the signal path.  Just in one jack, through the re...
Does a turntable make a DRAMATIC difference?
VTA, tracking force and alignment are everything!   I’m pretty sure this is why some people buy an album like a 180 gram or 200 gram and give totally different reviews on the sound quality of it.  One says it sounded very dull and lacked highs and...
Does a turntable make a DRAMATIC difference?
I have a completely restored Thorens TD-125 with a Saec WE-308L tonearm and Technics EPC-U205 mkIII cartridge w/a new Jico SAS boron Stylus.  A huge plus to the phono system is being able to adjust the VTA on the fly.  I purchased a Fonolab tonear...
Schiit's solid-state 6SN7
So the real reason Schiit put these on the market here is because of the low availability of tubes right now.  Yes they did have these before but the higher push Now is to provide something to keep your equipment running while you may be hunting d...
What the ship just happened?
One BIG no no is never just wrap a big amp(or any heavy piece of equipment) in just bubble wrap. The first time it’s dropped all the bubble wrap pops and your protection is gone. I worked at an audio company for many years where we’d get in units ...
Where do you want your system to go when you go?
I’m experiencing the same issue.  I’ve been in and out of the audio business all my life.  From having a small high-end audio store in S.CA back in the late 80’s to working for high-end audio manufacturer’s.  Most of my excessively custom over bui...
Go Ahead and Laugh at Me
Fortunately here in the USA since we’re at 115V (really around 125V now days) so even if you set it wrong it won’t damage the equipment.  It just won’t work. Now if you’re in a 220V country and you set it to 115V and plug it in your screwed!
"Too much gain"? (Cary SLP05 question)
Philharmonicpete - Yes the total gain is reduced about 3db to about 21 I believe on the ultimate upgrade. The reason is that the plate load and cathode resistor values were changed which changes essentially the “slope” if you will, of the sound.  ...
"Too much gain"? (Cary SLP05 question)
@xcool’s statements are perfect.  Love it.  Although the Cary support person is very nice, sometimes he doesn’t give me a straight answer [. . .] He never really answered my question. “Haha. Yeah. There was a time when I used to rave to anyon...
"Too much gain"? (Cary SLP05 question)
Just thought I’d ad my two bits as I have a lot of experience with the SLP-05. I do not work for Cary Audio. First off avanti1960 is correct. The two “Balance” controls, essentially extra dual mono controls, can be turned down so you have plenty o...
Best double live vinyl?
There were definitely many great ones in the 70’s.  I have to throw down four favorites that I wore out more then one copy of each of album.  And yes there probably was some leafy stuff in the folds.   1)  Led Zeppelin - The Song Remains the Same....
Looking for warm tube preamp (should pair well with Pass power amp), budget $6000
For the Cary SLP-05, it uses 6 6SN7’s.  Two for the balanced inputs and for for the balanced line section.  Not sure why your mentioning the 6H30 and 6N6P.  What am I missing?  I was only talking about retuning the SLP-05.
Looking for warm tube preamp (should pair well with Pass power amp), budget $6000
If you want to get a warmer sound from your SLP-05 try some NOS tubes. I love the old Sylvania tubes in it. Fuller and smoother then the stock tubes and just all around better sound. If you want a much warmer sound try NOS RCA tubes. I prefer the ...
Looking for warm tube preamp (should pair well with Pass power amp), budget $6000
I’d pick up a used Cary SLP-05 preamp and then send it in to them for the Ultimate Upgrade.  Huge improvement over the stock unit.  smoother and cleaner with better low level resolution.
