Would you still pay $10k or more for a turntable not full analog front end these days ?
What could be a better purpose than buying excellent turntable ?
What was the most expensive record that you ever bought ?
CDs don't count, this is analog thread.

Analog is more reliable and convenient, everything is right there, and with streaming you got nothing, something comes from somewhere, maybe, if you are lucky. Upgrade analog, you spent enough on digital already.

Sealed vinyl might be defective, it's not always fraud. I don't buy them above, say, $20 either unless I can return it.

It depends on how many records you really need. $30 on average is very reasonable for excellent pressings if you are selective enough. I need hundreds not thousands and I can tolerate not being able to get them all at once. I have 99 cents records...
Do you belong more to souce first or to speakers first school of thought ?
What Ralph didn't add to that and I will - It's also got to be tube preamp! He thinks exactly the same, including about phono preamps, but simply decided not to say it.

Very cool. The film freezer.

None of the records that I bought on ebay from Japan were over graded, though I mostly bought from three or four particular people. Often the condition was better than promised and the records had been cleaned.

No, of course not. One day I should get a streamer and better DAC but I am on a tight budget so can't upgrade whatever I might want to.

And they say that equipment is expensive, $26k for a reissue set.
Which has a greater influence on sound quality, the amp or the preamp?
Well, sound preferences differ, so do preamps. As far as I know, most audiophiles do have active preamp in their systems. Going direct can give more pure but less refined presentation.

Wrong. Get the speakers you like most and put them in whatever room you've got. Next year you might move to a better place with better listening room and you wouldn't have to replace speakers.

Right, but I didn't mean that. I explore new music on youtube too.

Fine tuning is important part of audiophile engagement, unlike music lover engagement. That's one problem with digital - nothing to do with it but listen.

You may not need active preamp in the system but you will always want it, whether you know it or not.
