SUT Opinions Yes, it will work - but will suffer from high noise level and limited dynamic range! This I learned from experience! Get a good SUT! I have five, including a Mike Sanders (Quicksilver) to use with my various LOMC'S.
And yet, another speaker query That was some good stuff you were smoking!
My review of recent "Obscure Albums" post so far. Part 1 My advice is: don't expect a career as a music reviewer!
Musical Concepts modification of B&K pre and amp? If your B&K preamp/amp still sound fine and work trouble-free leave them alone! The Musical Concepts mods are a side ways move at best!
Matching SUT for Benz Micro MC Gold Bellari MT-502 ($499) and a good half-meter IC. I have one and am very happy with the SQ! Made in the USA, too!
Will Step Up Transformer Improve the Sound Quality? All active stages add noise to the signal. SUTs have NO noise! The music signal is heard against a blacker background - more details are perceptible!
Which VTF Scale are you using? I have one of the cheap Ch*nese ones. Unfortunately it stopped working. So back to using my faithful Shure balance scale! I will not buy another electronic scale!
Will Step Up Transformer Improve the Sound Quality? You can buy and try a Bellari MT-502 SUT ($499) and an AQ Silver Extreme IC ($90 from HCM). I use this combination! I prefer it over a high-gain phono stage.
Class AB Amp great at transient response, timing & low volume needed up to 5K Perreaux 2150B - 340wpc/8ohms, 680wpc/4ohms, 920wpc/2ohms. Class A/B. Typically available for under $1K. I have one! Sound quality competitive with any five-figure amps!
What aspects of a tube amp/preamp contribute to "holographic" effect on soundstage? 99% of soundstage is recording dependent! Recordings, analog or digital, vary widely in the spatial aspect one can hear!
Nem preamp Electrocompaniet or Mark Levinson? I'd go for the Levinson 38S preamp. Keep the 27.5 amp! I like and believe the older Levinson amps (made before the company changed ownership) are better in SQ and build.
What makes speaker's sound big? I have a pair of Ohm Walsh Sound Cylinders. They have an 8" driver crossed over at a high frequency to an upward-firing dome tweeter. They are capable of room-filling sound and 3-D imaging - from any listening spot! Bass quality is deep and full, ...
B&W 801D trouble I don't think it is the crossover. You may have damaged the midranges along with the tweeters! What amp were you using? B&W's are pretty robust so you must have been really cranking them!
Phono amplification bang for the buck If you want a tube preamp with a phono stage the best bang-for-the-buck is an ARC SP6! I have one - paid less than $1K for it! Add a good SUT like a Bellari ($350 - I have one) and you'll have LP playback competitive with upper four-figure gear!
Speaker Upgrade Recommendation for Current Analog System - under $10,000 Budget The Tekton Moab's ($4500 including shipping) would be even better than the DI's! There are a lot of enthusiastic posts about them here in the Speakers category. If I had more room (and fewer speakers!) I'd probably buy a pair! |
