Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
donavabdear What a great experience! Wow. Brad
Convincing your local dealer to let you try speakers at home
@rsf507  curious if companies did home demos then why need a dealer network? Are you suggesting a company that is located in CA ship a speaker to someone in FL then fly out to do the setup? I would imagine this type of scenario would raise the p...
Convincing your local dealer to let you try speakers at home
Home demos are such a conundrum.  The speaker/room influence interaction is so dramatic that no two rooms sound the same so the speakers will sound different in each of those rooms.  I like @sounds_real_audio  idea of a dealer visit.  It is true a...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
A lot of system/equipment distortions are amazingly easy to hear with a signal generator with variable frequency and level. We use these to check for driver distortion during the recone process. That would be a good place to start and being simple...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
Isn't the bulk of amp/driver "match" really about coordinating [the same] dynamic range of each section of a complete system?    I mean an active system cannot be considered high end if it clips its HF amp on the tweeter before the LF amp clips on...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
@thespeakerdude No, not at you!  I was commenting on your most recent transparency post where you talk about amplifiers.
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
@thespeakerdude I’m with you.    If you want to significantly change the sound of a system, transducers- speakers and phono cartridges - are the way to do it. An open question:  Is this above statement about change something audiophiles agree wi...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
@pcrhkr The only difference between a "plate amp" and a "chassis amp" (in an enclosed box) is the metal that surrounds the actual amplifier circuitry inside. Seriously- its packaging. nothing more. Some of these "plate amps" amps you are describ...
Any still using the Dahlquist DQ-10 speakers?
I used to work for Jon Dalhquist- he was quite the pioneer!  His later DQM series (80s)  addressed cabinet resonance issues long before it rose to popularity.  He used two layers of variable density MDF with nextel between them.  The Magnat driver...
Who says studio monitors are "cold and analytical"?
That is not a symphony concert, it's scoring session.  You can tell from the Decca Tree mic arrangement up high behind the conductor.   There were several major scoring engineers who used to use B+W for monitoring in the past.  They two best know...
Who says studio monitors are "cold and analytical"?
It’s a shame people cannot see music in the different realms they are created and envisioned in. Pop music is completely different from something like Lenny Kravitz or Tom Petty or John Williams or James Newton Howard. If audiophiles throw everyon...
Who says studio monitors are "cold and analytical"?
Ghdprentice i don’t think you have the purpose of studio monitors right at all, no matter your friends have inferred by sales to their clients. A studio record is a sonic painting, from the mind of the artist working side by side with a skilled ...
Who says studio monitors are "cold and analytical"?
I find this thread funny, people say "class D" as though anything Class D sounds like everthing else Class D. Years back we tried building a CLass D amp at my shop, I wanted a low cost decent studio (no fan) amp. We started with off the shelf hype...
Are measurements the end all, be all?
Which speaker sounds better 1) 89dB 1 watt/1 meter sensitivity  OR 2) 95dB 1 watt/1 meter sensitivity ?   Which speaker has more bass at 20Hz: 80Hz-20KHz +/-2 dB SPL in a sealed box OR 40Hz- 20KHz  in a ported box?
Are measurements the end all, be all?
The issue i have with specs is where they were taken (room) and how they were taken (mics, software etc) and then the operator (who did it) has an enormous effect on the result. They are not a universal constant that is dependable when applied...
