the difficult second Lp
phase, it's hard to argue that cheap trick's second was a drop in quality--it's got 4-5 certifiable classics and, fwiw, is generally regarded as their masterpiece. that said, i also preferred their first, which i maintain is one of the best rawk r...
the difficult second Lp
couldn't sleep last night, so instead of counting sheep i though of two others:1. moby grape--wow. depending on my mood i believe their first record was the greatest pop album ever (or at least the greatest debut), but this one's a mess, with all ...
the difficult second Lp
ty lindisfarne. to switch to the "greatly improved second album" mode, you'd have to look at "astral weeks" (which i've always regarded as a tad overrated, but still great) and "the bends".
the difficult second Lp
the clash, give em enough rope--to my ears a weakish, overtly commercial followup to the classic debut--i just don't think the songs are there.doors, strange days--vastly inferior to the debut; "when the music's over" sounds like a watery retread ...
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of
armstrod, i saw o positive in boston (the ratskeller maybe?) and they were great-i still remember 'em from 30 years ago. the throbbing lobster label was the place to be back then. any memory of the primotons or cowboy mouth (different from the lou...
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report
steve earle, terraplane. this isn't radically different than his other records, or necessarily better, but what strikes me is how he can crank out songs at such a high standard over such a long, prolific career. for consistency, tom petty' the onl...

the lyres were fantastic-- the frontman was genuinely demented. i dug all the boston bands of that era--the real kids, the neighborhoods (whose "high hard one" would fit nicely on this forum), mission of burma (who are still around), volcvano suns...

lots of great picks, though i'd agree that many aren't especially obscure (who needs rules, right?). a few more:love nut, bastards of melody--a power pop masterpiece with really big hooks and tight playing. great cover of "green tambourine". (the ...
Best rock bass player
sorry, rox. agree with your take 100%--he's a bouncy guy.
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of
it's an extreme longshot that anyone here has heard it, but i have an 80s lp by a band call sponsors (s/t) which is absolutely brilliant--ten tight, hooky sorta new wavy guitar power pop gems. from what little i've been able to glean, they were fr...
Best rock bass player
a couple not mentioned above whom i've always admired:graham maby (joe jackson, freedy johnson et al)--a really lyrical player who really frames some excellent-sounding records. i have a special weakness for him cause he also played with they migh...
Best beer
thanks, marty. since we're logrolling here, i agree with you wholeheartedly on the hop/malt balance thing--the trap i think many of these young gun microbrewers fall into is overamping the hops and/or alcohol to give their potions more "character"...

Kanye West - Grammy comment, re Beck
fwiw, the pazz and job (national critics) poll had beck 16th; deangelo was first, followed by run the jewels (?), war on drugs and st. vincent. to arnettpartner's point, i think there's plenty of talent out there, but i agree the less of it is rea...
Kanye West - Grammy comment, re Beck
i can't comment on beyonce's music, which i haven't heard, and i agree with the general sentiment that kanye is an attention whore whose dis of beck is completely classless. however, i've always thought beck was a bit overrated--to me he's more cr...
