CD Recorder Died - Best Replacement Option? i used a philips cd765 for years--it was a very well-built piece which made great copies. easy to find used on ebay for $100 or less. if you must have a new unit, look at teac cdrw890, which is around $200 and looks pretty solid.
Attn Vinyl lovers - what CD Player do you use? i was as skeptical as anyone, but the sony ps1 (currently around $20 on ebay) really does sound vinyl-like--there's some basis for all the hype. i stopped using mine because i felt silly fooling with the controller, but it was sonically impressive.
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report bark psychosis--hex (criminally underrecognized, electro newwavy postrock; in the same vein as talk talk)absolute grey--greenhouse
If you have ever bought anything from HSU research like seemingly everyone else here, i've had only positive dealings with hsu, both in terms of product and service. i don't doubt that the op sincerely believes he's been wronged in some way by hsu, but you would think that given the op's stated le...
Rembering the 80s: College Rock joy division was awesome--they influenced essentially every gothy/angsty/postpunky band in existence. they only had two real records, as i recall, but they still sound fantastic after thousands of listenings
Rembering the 80s: College Rock glad this thread is revived--these 80s bands are what turned me from an admirer to a fanatic. sonic youth, meat puppets, husker du, windbreakers, thin white rope, lets active, comsat angels, lyres, neighborhoods, murmur-era rem, rain parade, and s...
Which used speakers $300 to $500 per pair? among the ones you've listed, for rock and blues i'd opt for the vr2s first and then the psb golds. if you can get either for
Apple to Acquire Beats Audio i saw in passing today that spotify now claims 15 million paid subscribers, while beats music is believed to have only 300,000. (according to the same story, apple's itunes radio has some 40 million listeners; most, i presume, using the free servi...
Advice Request - Sonus Faber Toy Speakers? since you asked, with a similar budget and placement limitation, i auditioned the sf toys and concertinos, along with dynaudio xcite and lots of others (didn't hear the cremonas, which are quite a bit pricier). i ended up buying the rega rs1, whic...

worst sounding great lps good thread--interesting and controversial responses. katy lied had a whole checkered history--apparently the original mix was botched due to dbx and had to be remastered--there's an interesting article about it here: http://www.steelydan.com/denn...
worst sounding great lps iggy's raw power (david bowie) is a famously botched production, as is marshall crenshaw's field day (steve lillywhite). i'd throw in sst-era husker du (really great songs terribly recorded); i've also been surprised at how bad-sounding some of th...
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report ghost, hiss golden meesenger's definitely mood music--not something you'd put on at the gym, more like something you'd listen to before a solitary peyote trip.i did listen to the jo johanasson--it's sort of a less electronic take on the ethereal s...
sub setup question marty, the nad's a hi-falutin digital amp which provides options for running either the sub full range or at different crossover frequencies--i would assume there's a crossover bypass switch on the hsu which one would use if he was setting the cro...
What's in your CDP tonight? the minority report two more, then i'll shut up for awhile:even, "salthill"-- obscure, fantastic aussie power pop somewhere in the realm of badfinger. huge hooks; the principal's a great guitar player.liquor giants, "one day at a time"--ward dotson, who used to play ... |
