LoRez Recording and HiRez Playback
The last I heard, music is mastered at 24/96. Early digital had a few different mastering formats, but the end result was 16 bit/44.1 Hz for CDs (Redbook). The problem with hirez download websites is that older music is still 16/44.1 even though th...
Billy Cobham Spectrum 40 concert
One of a kind drummer. Is he still playing a large drum kit? Does he still use North Drums?
Rogue Audio Perseus vs Perseus magnum
The Perseus Magnum is a major improvement. It shares the same Caps and wiring as the 99 Magnum Pre and a much larger power supply. There is a tremendous difference in dynamics between Perseus and the Magnum. Also a much smoother, natural presentat...
emotive mono blocks and b&w matrix 801s a good mat
It appears that the XPR mono blocks are a major leap forward from the XPA series.
Digital recordings on Vinyl
Will well recorded digital always sound better on a really good dac, as well recorded analog sounds best on vinyl? As discussed here many times, they're 2 different formats and I think the key to good digital is more than just the DAC. You have to ...
keeping amps cool?
"Actually you're better off using the fan to draw heat from the amp instead of blowing air directly on it."yes, I use a PQ exhaust fan...http://www.hometheatercooling.com/purchase.html
Digital recordings on Vinyl
Just a side note; a well mastered analogue LP beats most digitally mastered vinyl. And so much modern vinyl has defects not found on the original generation vinyl.I'm assuming you don't have a DAC yet or are you looking for an upgrade?
Too many tweaks?
"a Blue Circle 2x PLC Thingee which cleared up the dust bunnies I didn't know I had and lowered the noise floor quite a bit."Good to hear your recommendation...I'm about to order one. I already have 2 BC86 MK5's and they work wonders. Good example...
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
thanks Nick, it seems like the 2m Blue is very well reviewed.I still have a lot of research to do, but I'm thinking my Axis is above an entry level TT especially after the rebuild, so I'm not going to "cheap out" on the cart."Knownothing...I am us...
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
Many thanks, Al and in the mean time I'll check capacitance in the preamp.
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
Thank you for the recap, Al. All your statements regarding my problem are accurate. >"early on in this thread I had asked "is the harshness and thinness particularly or mainly evident on high volume peaks?" My understanding is that the answer w...
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
You are correct, Roscoeiii. The preamp is designed for it's tube linestage with a "bonus" phono section. But, yeah, the cart needs to be dealt with first.
Damping the analogue "setup"
Yes, cork works very well. If u buy a roll of it (very inexpensive) you may need to double it into 2 layers. If you want to try some excellent isolation feet, try Herbie's Big Tall Tenderfeet. I have them under all my components including TT. http:...
so many choices, yet so little to demo
IME these days local Mid/HiFi shops are willing to make a deal. There are different levels of PSB (Image, Imagine Series); assuming you like them I'll bet the dealer would put a package together if it involves 5 spkrs. But, pricing will be in the a...
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
Dougdeacon, Thanks for more valuable advice...I'm familiar w/ Raul's thread and will read it.But one question first, IYO should I be looking for a MM with low output specs?
