How many amps do you own? In the next room: a pair of rare Quad 50 monos, Tim Rawson First Watt F5, Quartre Gain Cell 250, GAS Son, Muse 100, Audionics CC2, Bedini 25/25. Two more rooms to go!
How many amps do you own? From where I'm sitting I see: Sumo Andromeda, BEL 1001, custom-built SE 6BG6, GAS Son of Ampzilla, Bryston 3B, Kenwood KM208. Around the corner are two SAE's (MkXXX in a wood case and a 101).
New to classical music And if you like the Sibelius try some of the Ralph Vaughan Williams symphonies. Adrian Boult is the go-to conducter with the LPO!
New to classical music How about some Sibelius? Symphonies 1,2 and 3 are particularly fine tonal works! Colin Davis and the BSO are a good recommendation!
most realistic sound from a stand mount Loudspeaker active or passive BBC LS3/5A's in their various iterations: Rogers, Spendors, Chartwells ... For half the price the Jim Rogers JR149 is an outstanding performer (love that cylindrical aluminum enclosure with the Kef B110 and T27 drivers!).
Best Tubes on Market today? Some tube testers will only give a "good" reading - not a numerical value. This usually means at least 50% cathode emissions. Meaning that tube life is at least half of new. Such tubes can be considered quite usable and capable of long service!
Best Tubes on Market today? You pay your money and you take your chances! I have bought many vintage tubes from different EBay sellers successfuliy. Look for sellers that offer tubes that are tested for shorts, leakage and cathode emissions (important!). This last measuremen...
How important is a preamp for purely digital sources? @pinemountainclub: there are plenty of excellent preamps available on the used marketplace - ranging in price from $150 to $10K + !
Flea Watt Amp: What Speakers Are. You Using With Yours? Recommendations I have a pair of Klipsch Heresy Mk1's to use with my SE 45 and 2A3 tube amps (1.75 and 3.5 watts, respectively).
Best Tubes on Market today? Vintage RCA 845's and GE/Sylvania 6SN7's are an easy recommendation. Used ones that still test good for emissions are certainly acceptable!
Best Tubes on Market today? Buy and use only vintage tubes! Avoid tubes from China and Russia! Sure, they are a lot cheaper but quality and longevity are inferior to Western tubes made in the 60's and earlier!
Best Tubes on Market today? @millercarbon: DC offset only applies to transistor amps. It is measured in millivolts. Tube amps do not have DC offset. Output transformers do not pass DC voltage. Regarding AC power lines, I doubt they have any DC voltage on them!
Help chose : Hafler 110 preamp or Carver C2 preamp ?? I have a Carver and a Hafler preamp in my collection. Along with the Sherwood 6040 amp. I'd say it's a toss-up between the two preamps. Though the Hafler has the pedigree of being designed by Erno Borbeley (who did all the Hafler SS gear).
Snell E-5 with my Rega Brio? The Brio will work well with the E's. The price is ok, too! Check the woofer foam surrounds for deterioration!
Snell E-5 with my Rega Brio? I have the first version of the Snell Type E. Paid $18 + sales tax at GoodWill for the pair. Woofers needed refoaming. Bought a pair of SEAS 8-inch woofers (same as the originals). An excellent speaker! |
