Great musicians who should have been famous except.... Dennis Brain - virtuoso British horn player who likewise passed away untimely!
Great musicians who should have been famous except.... Clifford Brown - great mid-fifties Jazz trumpet player who died way too young in a car crash!

Amber, anyone? If I had more space I could sub the Ambers in place of the RGR 4 preamp and Son of Ampzilla presently driving the Time Windows. Alas ...
Amber, anyone? I have a pair of Ambers: the original preamp and the Series 70 amp. I purchased them three years ago from different EBay sellers. They remain awaiting installation (lack of space!) at my place. The Audio Critic liked the amp. The price was right f...
JBL S3900 and S4700....possibly audiophile or not? Go for the 3900 - and save lots of moola compared to the Wilson's!

Affordable SET's with 211 or 300B tubes, (2000 dolllars maximum) PSE will have the advantage of lowering the output impedance by half. This is a GOOD thing!
Affordable SET's with 211 or 300B tubes, (2000 dolllars maximum) PSE with a pair of 300B's will work. About 14 watts at 1+ per cent distortion.
Full Range Drivers and SET's, why is a classic combo? I own three SE tube amps: a 2A3, a 45 and a 6BG6. The best speakers in my collection for them are the venerable. Klipsch Heresy Mk1's (99 db sensitivity).
Full Range Drivers and SET's, why is a classic combo? A good single-driver speaker for low-watt SE amps is an Altec 755. I had a pair. Put it in a one-cubic foot box and it will work from 60 hz to 12k hz with fairly flat response and enough sensitivity! Add a subwoofer for the bottom two octaves.
Full Range Drivers and SET's, why is a classic combo? The SE 300B can do about 7 watts at 1+ per cent distortion. The 211 and similar transmitter tubes can do about 15 watts SE. That is about a 3 db difference in drive capability for a whole lot more cost and complexity! |
