Didn't Dennis H. use a subtly colored piece of perspex under (behind) the output connectors?  Try looking at the back of the unit from slightly different angles and see if you can see a hint of red.

Can you also hear hum emanating from inside the case of the Parasound, or is it only from through the speakers? 
Straight out of the box doesn't work.
How was it sent?  UPS?  Fedex?  The problem may lie there...
