Help Identifying Koetsu Onyx

Hi All

I recently acquired a Koetsu Onyx. I can't seem to find any information on which Onyx version it is. It has a sloped end and there is no generator cowl. Pins are silver and the mounting bar is black. It was sold to me an Onyx Platinum. Would appreciate any views on this. Many thanks.

Pictures are in the links.

Few things odd with this cart. Could you take a digital microscope or close up of the stylus?
This looks odd, could be fake. The original Onyx’ from the 80’s had longer bodies & flat bottom. Never seen a slant front bottom on an Onyx before - I have only only seen this shape on Koetsu Black Goldline & Std Koetsu Red/Rosewood. The Rosewood Signature has a flat bottom.
Try Melvin Ang at Koetsu South East Asia - he is very good on Koetsu support.

To dover: I thought it looked really odd too. Its not a longbody and it shares the same shape as the black goldline and the standard rosewood, as you've correctly pointed out. I was thinking of sending it to Melvin Ang for a rebuild. I described the cart to him but he didn't have a firm opinion one way or the other.

Hopefully someone who has seen this before or who used to own one can chime in.
Hi gobenchannt

I have owned 2 stone Koetsus.

Pls refer to the links, for the pics

I got both Koetsus from Melvin Ang - so they are 100% genuine

From your Onyx pic - the slope from the front of the cart. seems consistent with both my carts.

What is missing is the "bulge" of the gold metal plate, where the cantilever ends.

I was made aware that in the past, there was an Onyx which is NOT Platinum (without this generator), so NOT sure where the "bulge" in your cart went to. Secondly, this could be a rebuild (by non-Koetsu builders) whereby there maybe NO bulge - but I have no experience on this

Silver pins are standard fare in Koetsu carts.

Still best to check with Melvin Ang

FWIW - cheers ... Peter
