I had the Klipschorns for around 25 years. I built my listening room addition around those speakers. They need a large room and 2 good corners. I retired about 3 years ago and moved into a condo so they had to go. I ended up with the Zu Def 4.
Klipschorn;
Killer speakers for rock.These speakers put a smile on my face every time I listened to them. They also sounded very good with jazz. Although I had a good room setup, they still did not image as well as the Zu’s. The Khorns do not go very deep in the bass. Surprising with the size of the cabinet and a 15" woofer. So I ran a sub woofer with them. The LaScalla’s have even less bass. As you know the Zu’s bass is room shaking down to 16 Hz. I ran a lot of amps through them before I moved. Sounds best with low wattage tube amp. One of my favorite amps with the Khorns was a 25 watt rebuilt push pull Balwin by Autospec. There is serious fatigue with mid to high power SS amps.
Zu;
I had the Zu’s in my old residence for about a year before we moved south and I put a few amps through them as well. I put everything from a 5 watt SET all the way to an Adcom 5802, 300 w/p/c through these. I thought that was going to be way overkill, but they really came to life, scary loud. I don’t recommend anything less than 15 - 20 watts to bring them to a realistic sound level.
For me, these speakers do everything right, they do more, are easier to place, and takes a lot less room than the Khorns. That’s just my opinion.
