Patty Barber Like JT

Most of you know Patricia Barber. I was fortunate enough to see her and her band at the Green Mill in north Chicago back in the late 1990s and it was one of the two best live shows I’ve ever seen. This is a live take on “Like JT,” which if you haven’t heard it is a must hear for all audiophiles off her Companion CD. It’s fantastic, but I thought this version was also worth sharing for its artistry and superb musicianship if not audio quality. As a pseudo musician myself I love this and hope you enjoy too.  BTW, I used this take on her Companion CD for years as a staple when I reviewed audio equipment because it’s revealing of so many things so maybe put this in your stable of reference tracks — not this YouTube version but the Qobuz or other high quality recoding.  Anyway…

I first heard Patricia Barber back sometime in the ’90s when my favorite radio station (public radio, 91.3 WYEP) played her cover of Ode To Billy Joe. So back in those days, if I heard something I liked, I went and bought the CD. I also had the bad habit of going back and buying more & more CDs by that artist just in case there was something else that would grab me. I wasn’t into jazz back then (so those CDs didn't get played but maybe once back then) , but that is how I came to own the red book of Companion and a bunch of other PB CDs. In the last few years during the course of some upgrading and messing around I rediscovered my PB collection and started getting into jazz. So I upgraded to the MFSL SACD of Companion.

I got to see her the 1yr of the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest. She performed in a smaller room, with may 2-250 attendees. Like an idiot she did 3 maybe 4 performances and I only bought tickets for one. And I was told each show was a different set. Phenomenal show!
