If anyone is still interested in this topic, I’ll have a fresh perspective to share in a couple of weeks. I ordered the 10th Anniversary Limited Edition version of the DAC2v2SE (used) from TMR. It’ll take a while to arrive here in Canada.
I’ll be comparing it to the Bryston BDA-3 I have at present. In terms of cost, they’re approximately equivalent. I started looking for a different DAC just because I wanted a half-width model. The DAC2v2 10th Anniversary is where my search led me.
FWIW, it marked a substantial step up from previous iterations. The earlier SE edition comes close, I gather. It already utilized the ESS Sabre 9038Pro and a Femto clock, custom Vishay Z-foil resistors, and other premium parts. Then, according to designer E.J. Sarmento, for Wyred 4 Sound’s 10th anniversary:
“The boards are totally redesigned with new parts and better routing techniques. Everything from power regulators, caps, output transistors, and USB interface were changed. The USB interface is a newer design with optimized galvanic isolation from the previous gen. The new version does the clocking on the DAC side of the isolation for improved signal integrity.”
And all the parts used in the 10th Anniversary edition were matched by hand. So although the price is similar to that of the Bryston BDA-3, I am hoping that it will be an upgrade, sound wise.
