Tune of the Day

"Blue Rondo a la Turk"  on the Two Generations of Brubeck album.  Wow.

There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8?  I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes.  This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it.  Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too.  It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.

You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All".  And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".

For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.

Anyway, that's my two cents today.

reubent,

I listened some more to Dawg Yawp. I find them very interesting and certainly, they stand out from the crowd. I thought it could be worth buying (it is available on vinyl) but upon listening over Amazon, the SQ seemed too digital. Thanks for making us aware.

slaw,

It is available on vinyl. I'm going to pick it up and I'll let you know how it sounds....

reubent,
I very heard of the Ass Ponys. Perhaps youve encountered Swan in your travels in and around Cincy/N. Ky?

Nutty,

I've never heard Swan. Hopefully I will cross their path someday.

Ass Ponys were a major local band back in the mid '90's. The had some critical acclaim nationally with their album "electric rock music". It may be an acquired taste for some listeners, but it is a favorite of mine since it was introduced.

The lead singer and songwriter from Ass Ponys is Chuck Clever. He's co-lead of the local band Wussy who have received considerable nation acclaim.

Nutty and All,

Here’s another local N. KY/Cincinnati Band that’s currently touring and making good records.

Frontier Folk Nebraska

I’ve seen them a few times and they are very good live. They play pretty regularly at Southgate House Revival and will be there later this month. I saw them there last year the nights they recorded their live album. Looks like they might be down at SXSW right now playing multiple venues.

Check out "Desert Car Chase", "I’m Electric, Call me Lightning" and "Buffalo Summer" from their album "Frontier F**k Nebraska". Good stuff....
