Sony SCD C333ES / question about internal DAC?
That early VC24 chip set has it admirers. Some say it makes no difference compared with later, more integrated Sony chipsets, just fewer chips. One useful feature on some Sony players is a choice of filter cutoffs. One can have a sharp low pass fil...
Thiel 3.6 s and amplifier choices
Got another Sony TA-N80ES so now running them as monoblocks in bridged mode. The extra power (circa 500 wpc) made an audible difference and I wouldn't volunteer to go back to the 270 wpc (into 4 ohm) single amp arrangement.I'm confident that I coul...
Looking for budget reciever for second system.
I picked up a Sony AVD-C700ES receiver recently for a bedroom system for $60! It's driving a pair of Sony SS-TL3 floorstanders. It is indeed a very good receiver , nice styling, and the S-Master Pro DSD digital amps seem to work great. Supposedly S...
Thiel 3.6 owners - what components are you using?
I'm using a pair of bridged Sony TA-N80ES power amps with a matching TA-E80ES pre-amp. Sources include the matching Sony ST-S730ES tuner, Sony ST-5000f tuner, and Sony PS-X700 table, Sony DVP-S9000ES CD/SACD player, and a variety of other tuners. ...
Give up on Thiel 3.6 or try another amp again ?
I have the 3.6s also. I originally tried driving them with a Sony TA-N80ES. They sounded OK but there was still obviously room for more.I picked up a second TA-N80ES. The owners' manual does not seem to recommend bridging the amp for low impedance...
dbx Expnders - 3bx, 5bx
I've just picked up a single band dbx 228 expander. I'm very impressed, especially with FM, which I listen to a lot. However, it doesn't have the impact restoration feature but it does have the dbx decoder - now to find some encoded LPs.It also wo...
Thiel 3.6, what will drive them best?
A Sony TA-N80ES works fine with mine. The pre-amp is the matching Sony TA-E80ES. At 4 ohms, this amp is rated at 270 wpc and has "dynamic" ratings down to 2 ohms. They typically range from $500 to $900 used.Of course, I'd love to get another N80ES...
Thiel 3.6 s and amplifier choices
I've got a Sony TA-N80ES driving my Thiels at 270 wpc at 4 ohms. One upgrade path is to buy another Sony and bridge them, one amp per speaker.Any experience on this setup or considered opinions?
Tube Tuners
Just got a Scott 310E, freshly aligned and put in tip top shape by my tech. I just am extremely impressed.I've also a McIntosh MR71, Sherwood S3000V, Fisher KM60, Sony ST-5000FW, Sony ST-730ES, and a couple of the new Sony HD tuners. A number of o...
Scott Tuner
Just got a Scott 310E. Of the 8 or 9 tuners I currently own, this one sounds the best. That includes a McIntosh MR71, Sherwood 3000V, Sony ST-5000FW and ST-730ES, etc.It truly does deliver an exceptional sound quality through my Thiel 3.6s, a very...
Infinity Beta 50 speakers; how do they compare?
I stumbled upon a nice Fisher KX200 tube integrated amp at 30 wpc. I'm thinking that the P362 might be a lovely match for the vintage tube amp. The 91 dB sensitivity sure sounds attractive. To start with I'll try the amp with a pair of refurbished ...
Infinity RS 2.5
I've a pair and am very impressed. The ribbon tweeters and mid-ranges sound sweeter than my Thiel 3.6s. The bass is strong and controlled but the weak point, such as it is, is with the integration of the ribbons and the woofer. It works OK but one...
What's the oldest piece of gear in your system?
I've three tube FM stereo tuners - a McIntosh MR17, a Sherwood S-3000V, and a Fisher KM-60. All circa 1963 or so.All I need is a Scott 310E or similar and I'll have a nice representative of the four major brands selling tube FM tuners in the US.Th...
Best vintage receivers for FM?
I've been through a pile of vintage receivers the last three or four years and the best sound from FM and line level inputs is the Sony STR-6200F.Just a solid and slightly warm sound that hits my sweet spot. The cosmetics have this very classy loo...
