Greetings, If tube rolling between sockets or a different pair of tubes does not solve the problem then It's most likely the stepped attenuator. Yes it's a well known problem from years past. I don't recall the brand but they're pretty expensive....

That sounds like a bad tube. You can try cleaning the sockets and pinsĀ  first tho. If you plan to keep your AI in stock form, I suggest only using Russian tubes, Sovtek or the 1975 Voskhod 6N23P. Do NOT try any others especially not an NOS type ...
