i have looked all over for this solution. the wadia is great but at over 300+ duplicates my macg4 set up. the onkyo isn,t available yet w/o taking extra effort to get one from europe and then maybe ac settings need adjustment? peachtree has the idecco but i already have the origonal one and have decided not to spend more to get the better one for a bedroom system. so i bought a little pin unit at radioshack that plugs into the bottom and as i assume bypasses the headphone amp and uses the internal dac. it also has the usb attachement. i think it was 25 bucks. fine for music but not digital out. i also use a jbl dock that sounds ok.. just ok...i have concluded that i will wait til the guys at apple decide to loosen up and license someone else in the next year or so. in the meantime i spent the money i saved on not getting the wadia and got puremusic and it was a better way to go for me. best 109 dollars i ever spent on hifi. they have a discount til the 18th by the way. 109.00 instead of 129.00. but it is for mac computers only

I must be confused. My distributor has "loads" of the ONKYO DSA3 here in the US of A.

Are you talking about some other unit.

I was going to use the digital output. the onkyo i was referring to is the "onkyo nd s1 ipod dock”. The reviews were great on this item. I contacted onkyo and they have no plans to sell this in the USA.

Do yourself a favor and get the Wadia itransport and be done ,I got the wadia in my basement second system with the ipod classic 120 gb and is great unit.

is the new wadia 171i that much better than the 170i?

171 is not out yet. I have one on order from MusicDirect, and they are quoting that they should be receiving them direct from the importer in early January.

Have you had any experience with the 170i? Let us know what you think of the 171i. What are they asking for the 171i?

Ive had the 170 since it came out. Great product, I really like it. If you read all of the posts out there, there are many descriptions of its weaknesses, especially that it is prone to jitter. To my ears it is hard for me to decern between the Ipod with music ripped with Apple Lossless, and the same CD. All is running through my Cambridge Audio 840C CDP.

So naturally I am curious about the new model. It is listed at $600, and bosts a new power supply and some other upgrades over the 170.

If you have an iPod, then I assume you have an iTunes collection on a PC or Mac. If you also have wi-fi in your home or an ethernet outlet convenient to the audio system, you could instead get a Logitech Squeezebox Touch and bypass the iPod altogether. The Squeezebox Touch will find your digital music files residing on the same wi-fi. It can also channel any digital music services you've subscribed to.

The Squeezebox Touch costs less than the Wadia iTransport ($299 vs. $379), has a built-in 24/96 DAC, can use the internal DAC to output analog stereo headphone or R-L RCAs, or bypass the internal DAC to output SP/DIF in RCA coax or Toslink. It can accept input from wi-fi, Ethernet cable, or USB.

Space has also been an issue, as the location of the stereo, is in a remote location in my living room, off to one side, in/on a small cabinet.

As info, my system comprises: Wadia 170 feeding the Cambridge Audio 840C DAC section, and a Cayin A 50T integrated with Gold Lion KT77's in the output section. All cabling is ZU Mission, and Zu Essence Speakers.

I have kept my laptop on all the time for 2-1/2 years, so I don't think that would be a problem. I use a USB portable hard drive (about the size of a wallet) attached to my MacBook to hold all my iTunes files.

But now that I think of it, the Squeezebox Touch has a USB port, mostly intended for plugging in a thumb drive full of music files, but I wonder if it could find the files on a portable USB hard drive plugged directly into the Squeezebox? I'd think so. The reviews I've read indicate that the Squeezebox Touch is very good at finding all the music files on your home network.

As for room/space, the Squeezebox touch is only 3"x5"x3"d. You can tuck that pretty much anywhere.

I have all my music on a portable HD as well. If It can run thru and play the files witout itunes, that would be a major plus in my book. If this is possible, will it recognize and play apple lossless compression?

So I checked the logitech site, and it will play Apple Lossless. Johnnyb53, would you consider testing the portable HD direct to the squeezebox, and let me know if there are any differences in interface or sonics compaired to your laptop? I would greatly appreciate it. The Wadia 171 I have on order isn't supposed to be ready to ship until Jan. so I could cancel and save some cash as well.

Actually, I don't have a Squeezebox Touch yet, though I plan to get one. I'd think an email to Logitech's customer support would clear up whether the Touch could find the music files on a directly connected USB hard drive.

Logitech's FAQ about attaching USB storage only refers to it as a "USB drive." It doesn't further delineate it as a "USB flash drive" or "USB hard drive," so even Logitech's detailed info is ambiguous on the subject.

I know three people who owned the Wadia ipod dock and sold it when they bought the Onky ND-S1. It is available from Japan on ebay with a universal power supply that works fine with US current for around $200 delivered. Also, I had the new Cambridge which also extracts a pure digital signal from the iPod and it is also not near as good as the Onkyo.
