Very nice room. How does the hemifusor at the ceiling add to the listening experience?

APL Hi-Fi NWO-4.0SE CD Player Review
John, congrats on your new room. Looks fantastic and Im sure sounds great. I rode the NWO train from the 2.0 to the 3.0GO model before selling it and going a different direction. I am also thrilled with the sound Im now getting from my system. From what Ive read in this thread, the NWO4.0SE is a big step forward technologically and sonically from the 3.0GO. I would love to hear it someday in my system. I do think the output stage in many DACs is a weak link and I have always liked Alexs approach with the transformer coupled tube output stage. Obviously, this is far from the only aspect of his design that sets it apart. During my time as an APL Hi-Fi customer I found Alex to be responsive, professional, extremely knowledgeable and fun to deal with. He helped me take my system to another level and for that I am grateful. Yes, he went through a challenging period where he became less responsive, and I like many others expressed my concern. But, we all hit rough patches in life, and the true test is what we do in those situations. As far as I can tell Alex dealt with his issues, stuck with his vision and customers and is now in a better/stronger position. Well done I say. While the boutique nature of the NWO series is not for everyone, the audiophile industry is the better off IMHO for people like Alex who push the state of the art regardless of cost. It appears this technology will find its way into a more mainstream priced DAC soon and that should be interesting. Peace also, Earflappin |
Great review John. So nice to see your contributions here again. It's great to see that the NWO design has successfully incorporated the ECC182 tubes. The ECC99 was dreadful in the Denon APL player. There is no way I would ever go back to that after discovering the 7062 and then later, the 12BH7. I know this created quite a stir with Alex, but these tubes have worked flawlessly for me for 3 years now. Thanks again John for sharing your findings. The NWO player is way beyond my budget, but I still thoroughly enjoy the APL player I have. And I still have not had a chance to try the APS Pure Power conditioner but I will. I am now in So Cal for a new job and once I get into a house, and get my system shipped out from MN and installed here, I'll be back in audio heaven. John |
Jafox, good to hear from you and congrats on the new job in So Cal. Where exactly in So Cal will you be? I have the PurePower 2000 and can vouch for it's performance. That being said I bought an old Elgar 6006B for $200 used (they normally sell for $1000) for my Atma Sphere amps based on the recommendation of the designer. It is audibly better with the Atma's than either the PP or the all directly. Even with the latest current regulation circuit my Atma's would hum with the PP. The Atma's run in Class A and draw large amounts of continuous current. Good luck with your move. Hopefully with the state of the RE market you can get a good house at a good price, one that affords you the potential for a dedicated listening room. |
Alex, Richard Rives did a great job on my room. Using his instruments he first diagnosed my room's problems and then created a room treatment design that addressed those problems. After I implemented his design, he returned with his instruments to determine if additional modifications needed to be made. His measurements showed that the room response was significantly improved. The bass response was just about where I wanted it. Richard nailed it the first time! The room is now capable of revealing subtle musical nuances. Brent Butterworth, who reviewed my room for Home Entertainment magazine, concluded that it is a high performance room. I'm quite happy with it. Many thanks for your kind compliment! Peace, John |
Earflappin, Alex is a perfectionist. All his hard work and creativity paid off in the NWO-4.0SE. It's a masterpiece! You are right about some of the elements from the boutique 4.0SE trickling down to his more affordable digital. Alex's new DAC incorporates many of those elements and should be a winner. Thanks for your kind words. Peace, John |
John (Jafox), I'm glad that you are still enjoying your APL player. The E182CC tubes in the NWO-4.0SE are very linear, I've been very happy with them. When I had the APL player with the ECC99 tubes, I tried a supped-up version of that tube which was much better sonically. I still have some fond memories of that player. However, from all indications, for about the same cost today, a transport or server plus Alex's new DAC is miles ahead of that player sonically. Thanks for your compliments. Peace, John |
Hi Earflappin: I'm in San Clemente. I'm loving it....the weather and just a few minutes from the beach. I grew up in So Cal but it feels kinda strange to be living here all these years later. I won't get settled into a house here until next summer so no fancy in-home music reproduction for me until then. And yes, the down turn in the RE market here is to my advantage. The MN RE market did not at all take a hit like it did here. Interesting report on the Elgar 6006B. I've never heard of it. Each of the CAT JL-3 amps needs its own 20A circuit. And I have wondered what a Running Springs Duke conditioner might do for each. But it also means 2 more $$ power cords. So far the Dream State Dream Catcher is the killer power cord for all my tube components...and the Veridical for the APL Denon player. It all gets costly so quickly. So if anybody here would like to donate their NWO-4.0SE when they move up to the next APL model, I can provide very affordable vacation accommodations here in Paradise. 8-) |
Hi John (jafox) - A strong Plan B is as John (Puremusic) says- ALex's new SS DAC and a transport or server. If your choice is transport, I would seriously find a used Esoteric of some sort. The Denon transport and laser are awful compared to a decent Esoteric transport, especially the UX-1 or X0-1. I compared them (and actually still have my modded Denon in the basement somewhere) and the difference in the actual sound quality is huge, or at least it was in my system. I currently am using a UX-1 modded to a UX-1pi by Esoteric, feeding into an APL SUPER-DAC 4.0SE prototype Alex built for me about 9 months ago, complete with the E182CC tubes, 20 32-bit DACs/side, etc., etc. Still waiting for the finished product, but waiting with a big smile as I enjoy some of the finest sounds my system has ever produced. Keep us posted if there's any way we can assist your re-settlement. No, I will NOT donate my SUPER-DAC prototype at this time, for ANY price!! So far I think its a 1-of-a-kind. :-) |
A review of NWO-4.0SE in Fidelity, a Scandinavian high-end magazine, appears to reinforce some of my superlatives. APL has obtained permission to post the Google translation of that review on the APL forum: http://www.aplhifi.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=5031&highlight=#5031 Hopefully, an approval will be granted for someone to post a better translation. |
