Classe DR5/DR9 - get a better pre?

I run my Apogee Duetta Signature speakers with a single Classe DR9 power amp and Classe DR5 pre. Is this still a good pairing, or is the DR5 able to be easily bettered without spending big $$$ Thanks.

What do you mean by not too much money? To some $3000.00 is not too much money and to others $1000.00 is not too much money. What is it about your system that you want to improve? Usually upgrading your front end is where the biggest improvements can be made. Considering your present system, the items that you have listed, this might be a more appropriate place to look at. Are you running digital, analog or both? I quess all this really doesn't answer your question but then again your question leads to lots of questions. In short the answer may be yes and no. It depends on what your trying to improve upon and what your front end is. If you want to submit a little bit more information I, or others, may be able to give you some helpful advise. Good luck!
Good points; I didnt mention much about my source as not many people in the US know it that well - Deltec DPA PDM2 two box dac and CEC TL5100 belt drive transport (digital). I am trying to get a little more musicality, naturalness and I guess what we all want, realism (enjoyment from the "you are there" feeling. I have limited choice of brands where I am, and guess have a budget of around US $800 to $1500. I could switch to say an Audio research LS2 or similar, but dont know if this would be a sideways step or not. I guess my real question I should be posing is: how does anyone rate the Classe DR5 preamp, as I this is probably my biggest unknown factor....Thanks for any help.
Good Question. I own a DR 5. Prior to that I used an Adcom 555 and 565. The 555 was pure mid fi and the 565 had an excellent phono stage and good line stage. I also have experience with the sound of other pre-amps, Mod 3A, SF line 1 sig, and various extreme high end stuff through a dealer friend of mine. I would rate the DR 5 as a good pre amp and a very good match for your amp. I believe the line stage has good pace, fine tonality and sets up a good sound stage. It has a smooth sound, not unlike tubes. If you have the ability to try out any pre-amp in your system, then do it. You have nothing to lose. However, in your price range you own a good pre-amp. I would recommend the Mod 3 A as an upgrade. It is tube based and has better resolution an accuracy. You can find one on the used market for around $1100-$1300. Stereophile raves about Adcoms new GFP 750. I haven't heard one yet, but if it is as good as they say, it is a steal. Having owned the 565, I know Adcom can make decent stuff. What is it you are looking to improve upon with your current system. That might make it easier to recommend other items of interest. Good luck!
