Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

orpheus10, thank you. No, I don't have it and in fact I have not heard it before. My collection is small, only what I really like and listen to a lot.
You are right about dacs getting better. Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt sounds quite good and is great if you need music on the go.
orheus10, how you doing ?
Something for you. It's too much for the others. Well, except Mary, of course.

Orpheus10, yeah, I've always liked this tune too but haven't heard Santana's take before.
Frog, no offence, I know what you mean. I meant too far from what you usually discuss.
Well, this is...a matter of taste. Completely different.

Orpheus10, there was a big concert in Montreal, that composition is one of many performed there.
Orpheus10, this is a great video. Thank you.
I would say that memories are timeless, forever alive, regardless of the passage of time.
I have Nakamichi 682ZX not Dragon, Orpheus10.
Try Maxell MX-S with your Sony, in my experience it is best non-reference metal tape.
How about Armenian singing ?

Orpheus10, I know the Getz/Byrd album. You are right - beautiful.
And I have run into those musicians in Istanbul on youtube. I am not particularly impressed with her singing but I like the music, kind of Turkish/Greek/Gypsy fusion. Rhythmic and melodious.
Listen to the first composition. It's been a while since I posted anything by McLaughlin.

Orpheus10, no that was not much to my liking.
I keep looking for an interesting music, nothing to report yet.
Orpheus10, that's fine with me. I used to like 'classical' jazz, but that was a long time ago. I still enjoy some compositions, not many.
As for classical music, well, that's different, though McLaughlin says that in his view there are no barriers. He played classical too, not much.
Orpheus10, agreed. But I do like quite a number of what you post when it is not jazz, at least not traditional jazz.

frogman, he did not understand  the "word" that McLaughlin had delivered when he had  written it many years ago. And instead of "speaking" it as was intended he went into something of his own making that at times sounded like inappropriate and meaningless wandering.

In fact, I generally like Jean-Luc Ponti, and I very much like his performance in Mahavishnu's Visions Of The Emerald Beyond. But here - no.

There is a much better version of this composition where McLaughlin plays with his later Shakti group. Easy to find on youtube.

This is a complex composition that has many subtleties, you can't just come out on stage and play it. Even Mclaughlin himself couldn't.
