I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Today's Listen: Hampton Hawes -- HAMPTON HAWES TRIO, VOL 1 with / Red Mitchell(bass), Chuck Thompson(drums) The notes point out that Hawes is "one of the forces in West Coast Jazz circles,..." Recorded 1955 One of Hawes tidbit's of wisdom: "Music is truth. You can't play music and expect to fool music. God knows there are a lot of people fooling the public now. Clifford Brown, or Lee Morgan; I'll take Lee Morgan by a horses hair. I;'m glad you're branching out Rok, "Hampton Hawes is one of the forces in "West Coast Jazz". (I always use "is" as opposed to "was") All of "Hamp's" music had that hip cool West coast feel about it. It's so very unfortunate that the West Coast I remember along with so many other places that I remember no longer exist; it was such a cool place to be; quite different from the Midwest or east. One of the things I remember that I'm sure hasn't changed is that "Golden Sunset"; it takes forever for the sun to set in LA, and everything turns a brilliant gold, and it stays that way for awhile. LA is not a city like Chicago or any other city, but a bunch of small towns. And there's nothing like riding across these small towns in a convertible at sunset on a clear day with the ocean breeze in the air seeing the sights. (pretty girls everywhere). Just like the music, LA was cool. |
