Mirage M-1 tweeter died, No longer stock. Help
I bought a pair of m1's a year or so ago, off this board. Killer price of ~$360. Turned out three tweeters were blown. Found a guy who rebuilds them, and another who has perfect size match - titanium dome, not cloth. Fits right in the hole. I went with the latter, since the repair guy was too busy. I bought 4 new ATI tweets from LAB for roughly $400. The output level of the new tweets matched the remaining original, so for balance sake i replaced all four with titanium. Also the new ones didn't have the bar that pokes the grille cloth out. So, there was an aesthetic plus. I did have to change the lugs. I think the M-1 uses the same tweeter as the M-3. I purchased a pair of M-3's with both tweeters blown on the right channel. My speakers are the original M-3, not the M-3si. M-3 uses 8 ohm drivers, M-3si uses 4 ohm drivers. I couldn't find OEM replacements for my M-3's tweeters and was considering retrofitting with an Audax tweeter from Madisound when I stumbled across a listing on eBay for an Acoustic Research tweeter that vaguely looked similar to the M-3's tweeter. The eBay seller only had one and didn't accept returns. However, I found the same model on Parts Express' website. The screw patterns looked similar and it looked like it had the same circuit-board flange mounted terminals of the OEM Mirage M-3 tweeter. On a hunch that the AR tweeter's plastic housing could be removed, I bought a pair. https://www.parts-express.com/acoustic-research-1210128-oa-3-4-fabric-dome-tweeter--299-2036 It turns out that the plastic housing lifts right off when the 3 screws are removed, and below it is an exact replica of the M-3 tweeter, right down to the 2 dowel pins that align and pin the voice coil/dome assembly to the magnet structure. This entire tweeter bolts up to the M-3 tweeter housing using the same 3 screws. This replacement unit features a metalized dome, whereas the OEM unit is not metalized. Mechanically, this is a drop-in replacement. When installed, the speaker with the replacement tweeters sound exactly like the other channel with the OEM tweeters.Joy! |
