Old Phillips CD Players

My first player I ever bought(and still have)is a Phillips 880.It is similiar to the 960 and the CD 80.These machines are gorgeous and so well built.I am wondering if there are current mods that can be done to make it competitive with 1000.00 to 1500.00 players currently. Also if anyone owns one of the above machines, how do you think it compares to CD players today? I have a CD-80 and have been thinking of upgrading but the Phillips is so good I am not sure what to replace it with. Built like a tank and has never given me a minutes trouble in the 10 years I have owned it. I have a CJ premiere 17 preamp with CJ MF2500 amp, Thiel 3.6s, audioquest cables.
BTW- I am going thru a EVS Millenium DAC 2,with a built in volume control(attentuator)then direct to my amp.I also have a Pioneer Elite DV-37.I was just wondering if I could modify the Phillips 880 into a dedicated transport instead of having to switch digital cables around since I have been using my Elite 37 as my transport and my DVD player.
Krelldog,

A friend swears by the CD 80 which he runs with custom pre, custom DAC, large VTL monoblocks and Martin Logan CLS speaks. It does hold its own.

I think you could have it modded as a one box player but would find a better transport for serious modding. A transport would eliminate a lot of superfluous circuitry and noise.
