Preamp Deal of the Century

If anyone is looking for a true "World Class" preamp at a very fair price..heed my advice. I just recieved a Supratek Syrah preamp that was hand built by Mick Maloney in Western Australia, and it is absolutely beautiful! This preamp is the best deal you will ever find. I would put it up against any preamp out there for both looks and sound. Price? $2500 for the Syrah (includes Killer Phono stage). Not into phono? Try the Chardonney line stage for $2100. Don't get me wrong, I am not associated with this company. I am just a very happy owner! This preamp is VERY dynamic, yet liquid. It conveys the sound of music better than any other preamp that I have ever heard! You can check out the Supratek website at www. cantech.net.au

Hi BWhite, I came across this thread by accident. The Spratek Syrah seems to be a fantastic pre from what i have read so far. I am also on the lookout for a decent tube pre to mate with a Mcintosh MC352/402 which i hope to purchase in the near future. At present i'm using the MA6900 integrated with TDL Ref. studio monitors & my only source- a Linn CDP.

I was considering the C2200 as the pre for the above system. From what i have read I gather that you were using the Syrah with a MC2000. I'm sure you would have considered the C2200 at some point for the MC2000. If so I am very interested to know how the Syrah compared to the C2200 . I shall appreciate very much if you can let me know your views on the comparison .

Thanks in advance,

Dylon
Amandarae,
I placed my order early Dec. Mine is a 220v version,so this may be the reason for the faster turnaround. I hope yours will be ready really soon. Good luck!
Hi, I too oredered a Chardonnay together with a friend a few months back. Mick just mailed me saying the units are being run-in now. Wow!!

Can someone tell me if you can buy better tubes from Mick directly other than the stock. My listening preferences leans towards a bit of warmth with dymanic, detailed sound with good low-end attack as my speakers reach down to 18Hz. I will be using the Chardonnay with a Mcintosh SS amp. This is my first venture into tubes , so my experience is limited. Which tubes
will be best?

Thanks.
Hi all,

I have been using a Chardonnay for nearly a year now. This has been the single best upgrade i have done to my system. The Chardonnay has single handedly transformed my system to a level not possible without having to spend serious money.

I am very greatful to this thread & to all the people who have contributed tremendously. THANKS EVERYONE !! Made my life a lot easier ( no more swapping pre's for a long while ) & bringing real joy along with the pride of owning something special.

Some Supratek owners have previously commented that they have compared the Supratek with pre's costing in the $15K range. My first thought was ......yes i thought it was a lot of talk. Few months back i had a friends $16K solid state dual box-design pre in my system by a reputed US manufacturer. To cut a long story short let's say that my friend was not very happy . So for the people still on the fence, take a chance. This would be a decision very hard to regret. I too was skeptical but VERY glad that i took the plunge. Thanks again Slowhand for bringing this wonderful pre to our homes & hearts & thankyou Mike for putting it within our reach without a $15K tag.

O.K. Need a bit of advise. I need to roll my regulator tubes & would like to try the 6F6 highly recommended here.
I know this has been discussed above but now i need to order some tubes for my poweramp & thought of ordering a pair of 6F6's at the same time. The order has to be made fast so does not give me a lot of time to read all the posts. So pls. bear with me.

I would appreciate if you can educate me briefly on the brands & types of 6F6's i should look at and what shade of sound i can expect from them.

Cheers & happy listening,
Amandarae, Kgturner

Where can i find the Sylvania 6F6G ? Tubeworld does not have them.

Larryrosen,

Congratulations on your choice. I think you can look forward to a VERY pleasant experience. I say this confidently as my sys. is quite similar to yours in many ways & the Supratek was a perfect match in mine. I too use a MC352 paired to a Chardonnay driving TDL Reference Studio Monitor 'M' . Are your B&W the Nautiluses ? I have heard the N802 & in many ways they sound similar to the TDL's. I too run everything in un-balanced mode. Have been leaning towards sigledriver / horn / 300B sys since of late. The Chardoanny performed admirably in this combination as well. So hang in there & keep counting the days.

Now if only Mick puts his mind to a 300B SET .....................
Stevem1960

I am using Mauhorn IV with Lowther EX2 drivers, driven by Cary 300B SET monos. REL Strata 5 for the lows . Point source & no-crossovers is truly something to hear. Love the combo with my Chardonay.
Been using the Chardonnay with an ordinary power cord ( a Linn stock PC I think ) for awhile and have now thought of trying something decent. I can’t remember reading any comments on this topic. I would appreciate if you can share your experiences in this regard & your views on the best PC’s which works for Suprateks.
Thanks

Happy listening!
Simon74, Slowhand, Amandarae Thanks very much for the valuable advise. I will play around with a few cords.

I took Amandarae's tip on the Sovetek KT66 tubes & got a pair 3 days back from Tube Store. WOW ! I simply did not expect this much improvement. The difference is more than my move to the expensive W.E.300B tubes for my amps. There are improvements in ALL areas of the sound. I too use horns, Mauhorns/Lowthers. Makes me wonder if my previous EH6L6 stock tubes were dying out!

This again makes me think that all Tubes equipment users
should have a Tube Tester handy( I don't have one ). Any ideas on where I can find one which does 300B, 6SN7 etc? This may also be a good business idea if someone can market a 'new production' cheap tube tester!
Cheers,
Ikkyu, See my post dated 31-May-06 & Amadarae post dtd. 14-May-06. For very little money you can have a significant improvement with the Sovetek KT66 tubes. These are the same tubes Mike sent as stock for the Six Moons review.
