You can always pair the A21 with the matching Parasound JC2 or JC2bp preamp. Together they have a very neutral sound and you can find them used for less than $2000.
Preamp experiences for Parasound A21
Greetings
Need some suggestions, thoughts, feedback, whatever on buying a new preamp. Looking at new gear is always an exciting time, but then I cant decide lol. My main source 90% of the time is an Eversolo DMP A6, then I have Audio Technical turntable to a Musical Fidelity M6 Vinyl pre. Currently I am using a Classe SSP-800 I got dirt cheap locally, in analog mode for my preamp but wanting to switch to a traditional 2 channel preamp. My speakers are a pair of DIY 3 way that I built, they are very neutral, a tad on the bright side as they have Fountek ribbon tweeters but I love the sound of these tweeters. My subwoofer situation is a work in progress. Currently its a pair of REL HT12s that I got for $100 with blown amps. I removed the amps, sealed them back up and run them passive off an old SAE A502 amp with a Dayton DSP-LF. I know... lol But that old SAE amp sounds pretty dang good powering subwoofers. Anyway....
So far I am pretty happy with the sound, but here are some options I found that I think would be good:
Pass Labs X1 for $1850 + Shipping
BAT VK-40 for $2150(locally)
Denafrips Athena for $1600 + Shipping
Musical Fidelity M6S - $1200 + Shipping and tax
I would like to keep it SS and with balanced inputs and outputs. Dont need a DAC or a phone pre. I also sometimes use a Sony DVP9000ES for playing CDs but so far it sounds better using the Eversolo DAC.
To me the Parasound A21 sounds a bit dark and could use some smoothing in the upper mid/lower treble frequencies.
So yea, help me blow 2 grand :)
