sony 1am2 balanced cable query

Hi All,

I recently purchased a pair of Sony MDR 1Am2 headphone which come with single-ended and balanced cables. 

My question is about the latter. The end that connects to the "device" is Pentacomm (TRRRS), but the headphone end is only TRRS. Could someone explain in plain english whether this affects the signal by changing the wiring & ground, or is there nothing audible at stake here. 

Some internet searching suggests at least a theoretical difference in signal quality.

I think other headphones might have the same configuration change.

Curious if this more to do with physics, or engineering, or marketing.
