Technics SL-10 PC Board Corrosion
I have had a Technics SL-10 that I enjoyed for several years, but the tonearm belt started slipping, and after studying a couple of teardown pages, I set the table aside, thoroughly intimidated by the problem of removing the LP clamp from the lid.
I finally got up the nerve to open it up today, and it turns out there's nothing to it! I used the method of removing the plastic dust cover and loosening the clamp from the top, which was dead easy and broke nothing.
However, I was aghast at the massive amount of corrosion on the PCB underneath the plastic cover; since the unit still works (except that on 7" records, it sets the tonearm down at 10") as new, I think I dodged a bullet, and may just have a bad phototransistor, since all 3 platter LED's light.
My question is: how do I clean the board, and prevent the corrosion from returning? It looks as if something like water or soda seeped through the lid onto the PCB.
Also, since the board is out at the moment, I figure I may as well attack the electrolytics; is there a good source for a cap kit for the upper board? I found a kit on eBay for the bottom board, and plan to attack that next (that board appears to have no damage at all).
