The pleasure of ownership

One of the most life-changing things I've ever witnessed as an audiophile was a slide showing the marketing director at Focal list out the attributes that made a speaker valuable and worth buying.  It was my first introduction to marketing science, and in this slide only one term I remember was for audiophiles: "performance."

Mind you, I'm not knocking Focal, I want to use what I learned to talk about non-audio things.  Here are some terms I remember:

  • Modernity - The feel that you are buying cutting edge tech
  • Aesthetics
  • Value - That for this amount of money there is no better choice

Can you think of non-audio related terms which drive your choices?  Here are some of mine:

  • Strong looking
  • Meters
  • Clean looking
  • Silver
  • Sleek
  • Pleasing layout internally

I used to work with a guy who seemed to buy a new car every so many months.  He told me he knew he was taking a beating on the depreciation, but he just loved the shopping & buying experience and after the "new car smell" started to fade, his interest in owning faded as well.

When I saw the "light at the end of the tunnel" with my kids' college expenses, I started a several year journey, upgrading this, swapping out that, until I got the system to sound just like I wanted it to sound, maybe even better.

I'd characterize my equipment as:
. Musical
. Sophisticated
. Substantial
. Superb Build Quality
. Gorgeous
