I'm convinced that, compared to a lot of the other stuff people spend money and time on, this is important.
Movie theaters get rock solid, in the middle effect by placing the speakers behind the screen. If you can afford a sound transparent screen, and you are using a projector, this is the way to go, no doubt. But if not, one above and one below, in my experience, is the next best thing. And that 'comb filtering' argument that the 'expert stereophiles' still roll out is not backed up by data...no surprise, really.
