What is the diff between an AES and a regular XLR?
I have an unused 1m pair of Cardas Golden Reference XLR interconnects. Would one of the pair work as a digital balanced AES cable? If not what is the differences?
The pin connections are the same so it may work, but AES/EBU digital XLR cables are supposed to have an impedance of 110 ohms, while analog XLR cables may have a different impedance.
Cable construction and specs are different for digital cables, XLR plugs the same. You can try an XLR interconnect. It may cause additional jitter by IME it usually works OK,
