Worthy upgrade?

Right now, I've got a Grado Gold sitting on my SL1200, and I'm looking to upgrade. There's a second gen (1974) Sondek for sale locally with an older Goldring on an RB250 that's in good mechanical and cosmetic shape. Question is, where as it's one of the earliest generations, would it be a noticeable upgrade over the Technics? Or should I try and find a later generation that has better components?
