The best material I have used for packaging is the 1/2 inch "Pink" polystyrene foam used for house insulation...
- you can easily cut it with a carpet knife for a very custom fit
- it absorbs lots of shock
- it can take a pretty hefty blow from a sharp object without penetration
- you can "hot glue" it in order to build a custom shape
- It's really cheap
You can go with a 1" thickness, but it's overkill
Use a two-ply cardboard box to start - then hot-glue one layer of 1/2 inch of "pink:" to sides and bottom. Double up to 1" if you think you'll need it
Cut "Pink" spacers to prevent table from moving in the box
Put a small piece of "Pink" under the cartridge end of the arm and tape in place for support and prevent the arm from moving intransit.
Make sure the platter is secure
