speakers on hardwooed floors

Hello out there everyone. I just removed all the carpet in my home and replaced it with hardwood floors. In my music listening room I would like to put a area rug in front of the speakers. Does anyone know what size the carpet  should be? Can't seem to find any reading topics on the subject.
