USB compatability

Please be kind to this noob. I have searched and asked for months without much luck for an explanation other than " it probably wont work...
I bought a 2012 version of the Wyred for Sound DAC-2. This is my first DAC and all I could afford. My i ssue is i can run audio over usb from my old DELL laptop and all is well. I have a note 9 and BLU G8 phone. I can download an AP connect to the DAC and the phones instantly give a "connected to W4S DAC-2" a message but when I go to play a song i get a DAC not connected message. My first thought is the controller of the USB isnt capable of talking to the phones? i uses eXtreme usb music player and tried a samsung music ap. Ive tried different cables ect. Please enlighten me by telling me or referring me to where to find the answer. Thank you!

I've owned three Wyred4Sound devices and their customer support is among the best I've encountered.

Yup thats the email I used. Been emailing with EJ. Im not bagging on their support. Just saying they say it "probably won't work. So trying to understand why.
I am no expert but I believe that the first step in the communication is sometimes referred to as a handshake.  Just because the DAC can send its identifier to the phones does not mean the phones are capable of the reverse. Many DACs require a 5volt output of the sending unit to be initially present which the phones may not be capable of supplying.  I have encountered DACs that would not work with certain USB cables because the 5v power leg of those cables was purposely not present.  This initial communication probably occurs from your laptop without any issues but is not occurring with the phones.  I think you will need to run the DAC off your laptop and get an app to use on the phone to control or select the music the laptop is sending to the DAC.
