Gain settings - switching between ht and preamp

Hi,
recently got a freya plus finally and got volume shocked when switching sources from an avr to a dac source.

have learned volume (or gain) setting on freya for passive should be set to zero before changing to a buffered setting for a dac use. 
How do people change back and forth between ht and stereo source to avoid losing an eardrum???

You've learned, you always volume down, no matter what. You change sources or turn it off. Always a good idea to volume down..

Eardrums?  How about blowing speaker drivers.. Be careful..

What I have learned is it does little good to save your eardrums only to turn around and abuse them with ht.
