Phono setting and MC/MM

Gave a buddy one of my old turntables and it has a MC cartridge.  Will that work on a vintage receiver with just a single Phono option?

I had a mc with both MC and MM but his receiver is just Phono.

Will a MC cartridge play?

I agree you won’t have enough gain, most likely, but it will hurt nothing to just hook it all up and give it a try. That will let you know where are you are starting from.
BTW, I hope your buddy realizes what a good friend you are to donate a TT with a Hana SL!
Hook it up. Probably be fine just won’t play very loud. If the guy is happy with everything else, pointless to move laterally to another receiver, probably the best move will be to a MM cartridge.

Hang onto the Hana for down the road, maybe have a decent phono stage that can have it singing.
Dear @sdaudiophile69 :  "   his receiver is just Phono. "

you only need to buy a SUT and a pair of IC cables and you are done, no problem with the MC cartridges.

This SUT is very good alternative:
