Adding a sub - what will I loose?

It seems that adding another piece of equipment to the audio chain would degrade the sound quality to the main speakers (air, immediacy, the mid range, etc). Or am I way off here??

Currently have a preamp with no sub-out and low output tube amp. Plan to use line level to the sub and then out to the amp. That way speakers would not play full range (above 80hz).

Has anyone experimented with using standard RCA cables with Y-adapter vs. using a Y-cable? I only see the real cheap generic Y-cables available as most cable companies don't make the latter.

Seems like the using a cheap $5 Y-adaptor on any cable will pick up noise...no matter how expensive the cable.
Johnny53, you brought up a good point about room acoustics. I have some room treatment on the walls, corner traps and bass traps. All DIY stuff but it works. The bass traps made a huge improvement when I had full range speakers.

If we apply the soundsreally rationale, you'll need a pair of $25K interconnects.

Great article Al - Just wish I saw that when I was learning how to get my setup right. In the end that is what I learned the hard way and with the help of a lot of A'gon members advice when I posted a similar question.
