I use J Play as a music player. It is very basic with no frills but on sound quality alone it trounces both J River and Roon. You don't have to keep renewing it either.
JRiver is indispensable for me because I have a very large number of classical works stored in my server. It is the only one I know of that provides a customizable robust meta-data system that is suitable for classical. Plus the sound quality is excellent depending, as always, on your set up. If your tag system is simple and your file collection small, you may not need it.
I still use JRiver controlled with the JRemote app. Works pretty good for my needs so far. I may eventually give Roon a try.
My biggest gripe with JRiver at the moment is that it doesn't integrate Tidal or Qobuz. Not sure how it is handled in Roon, but it seems that I can play my Tidal library from within Roon.
