Great commentary, Jay. I came away with an overall very similar take.
I personally couldn’t get enough of the Acora Acoustics room. The sound was supermassive and superlative. The speakers filled the room better than 8ft tall speakers (from another popular brand not to be named) and music in the room sounded good everywhere, which very few speakers/systems can pull off. Surely the splendid TT with a $60K cart, and the fantastic music selection on the R2R tape ("The Coal Train" by Hugh Masekela), along with the killer VAC gear contributed tremendously here, although the 2.5-way Acoras let the front end sing through so clearly and with so much realism, and utter lack of speaker resonance/coloration, that the presentation was simply mesmerizing. At "only" $37K for the speakers, it was the best deal going for this top tier of sound from the show, IMO.
My very close second place room was the Borrensen. I love big, dynamic, full-range speakers that can play challenging and expressive music. This room was pleasantly playing non-audiophile music with a strong pulse (Martin Garrix - Animal) LOUD and with such speed and authority that I--as a big speaker fan-- sprinted down the hall to this room to hear what I imaged were monolithic towers, only to be floored at the little bookshelves delivering the fastest, richest, clearest, most encompassing and controlled sound I’ve ever heard from such a speaker. The excursion from the mid/bass driver from the Borresen and Acora was transfixing with the deeply satisfying bass they produced that rivaled the big dogs. I could easily live with this speaker and the surprisingly good matching electronics, in a small-to-mid-sized room, at least. I stayed in this and the Acora rooms for longer than I probably should have ;)
Otherwise, I liked the Lampi room and thought the speakers excellent for a horn-loaded design. I’d love to hear the Horizon DAC on that Acora system to see how well top-flight digital-with-soul fares against SOTA analog in an ultra resolving system...I sold my analog setup when my kids were born, and have been highly satisfied with my Lampizator DAC which I found to nearly equal my good (but not great) analog system. This show, with the many nice TT and R2R setups spinning in most of my favorite rooms, made me eager to revisit my record collection (and less so my record cleaner).
The BAT integrated and mating aluminum speakers (didn’t catch the brand) also was on my shortlist of gear that greatly impressed me, and again would like to hear the BAT on, say, the Borresen or Acora systems. The BAT room sound was SET-like in purity, top-end, and smoothness yet with near class-D-like detail and bass. Definitely not the dark BAT preamps from yesteryear that I tried so hard to like in my system when all the cool kids were raving about.
All around a great show, well organized, great people, and music lovers abound. Thanks to all who contributed and attended!-Michael
