Thiel Owners

Guys-

I just scored a sweet pair of CS 2.4SE loudspeakers. Anyone else currently or previously owned this model?
Owners of the CS 2.4 or CS 2.7 are free to chime in as well. Thiel are excellent w/ both tubed or solid-state gear!

Keep me posted & Happy Listening!

unsound - agreed to these concerns. We are talking about perhaps a degree or so in a speaker that is already back-heavy and also has adjustabliity in the legs to extend them farther out in front if necessary. Thank you as always for your thoughts.

There must be something to this idea of moving the XO away from the driver's into it's own enclosure.

I have another set of speakers, maybe 30 years old, with the XO hidden in a false bottom. I'm sure it's cheaper & easier to just mount it behind the drivers.

Tom you might be intrigued by this odd XO. It's all capacitors. No resistors, no coils. All drivers are selected to have the same sensitivity, so no need for resistors for shelving. Caps hi-pass all drivers so they have to be well-behaved above their normal freq. limits. And the woofer is a dual-coil unit with a cap feeding the 2nd voicecoil with phase inverted--to electrically cancel the high freqs driving coil #1.

I've never heard of or seen anything like it. The speaker is a brutal load from lower-mid-range upward because all (4) drivers are coming online, with no cutoff.

There are mixing engineers who swear by crossoverless speakers, usually 5” to 6.5” one-way sealed or open baffle . I was on such a project and couldn’t get my ears around the sound. On testing, their harmonic distortion was off the chart outside the target response range. Second harmonic could be more than the fundamental. A consulting designer proposed that I remove the entire woofer station one from the SCS4 XO to make it sound better. Indeed it removed the Sonic artifacts, but it also raised HM about 20dB.
This exploration caused me to develop a better way to block those out of band frequencies. I’m replacing all electrolytic caps with a radial array of PP film caps around the custom Golden Cascade core. I’m working on bringing sound quality up while lowering distortion even farther and controlling costs with an array of small value custom film caps.

Cheers

Tom
