You could very well be drawn to the sound, like I am, of the "BBC" monitors. Maybe a Spendor SP 1/2 or Harbeth Compact 7ES. All speakers are "voiced" and each of us has a preference. You can chase a particular sound with very expensive "tone controls" like changing amps, wires, interconnects, tweaks, etc... or you could find that these style monitors give you just what you are looking for with your present amp. Hit the web and look at past reviews on their webites, etc. Both these speakers fall in your price range, and the Spendors can often be found used here on Audiogon. Good luck, Charlie.
Speakers with
I've been using a Rogue 99/88 combo with Meadowlark Shearwaters and a CAL-10 CD player and have been pretty happy. But I have caught the audiophile bug of tweeking and as an experiment I decided to hook up an old pair of JBL bookshelve speakers(model 2600)and was very surprised to notice more "presence" in the midrange and bass compared to the Shearwaters. Granted the sound of the Shearwaters was more refined over all and the bass a bit bloated with the JBLs but I loved the "presence" of the mid range and upper bass with the JBLs. I just felt this was a foot tapping kind of sound. I would like suggestions for a speaker with that foot tapping presence when used with the Rogue combo that won't have the bloated low end. I am using DH labs biwired speaker cable. Thanks for you input.
