the I sounds like the music you hear while on hold played from an am source; the II sounds like the music you hear while on hold played from a fm source, out of range of your fm receiver.
I recently asked Red Rose this very same question and they indicated, without much more detail, that the MKI was better than the Spirit but was seriously improved upon in the MKII. Probably worth trying to take a listen.
I have Red Rosebud II's and cornfedboy must be listening to a different speaker than I am. In my room, they are + - 2 db from 8kh down to 125 hz, they image like demons and throw a huge sound stage. Throw in a well-integrated sub and you've got a great system. Check out the review in the Absolute Sound. These are world class mini-monitors.
