in beautiful sylmar, ca. former home of john bedini. land of big quakes. in '94, after some serious ground rolling motion, i was going to go into the living room and protect my the nak700 and tandberg cassette decks and tt.
THEN hell broke loose and i was sure we were in for a dip in ocean water (we live maybe 25 miles inland as the gull flies). i changed my mind and priorities in a split second.
i also experienced the '71 quake close up. i'm STILL not going back to live in buffalo, ny! (west side, near the peace bridge)
dont get me wrong, i have a deep love for buffalo and niagara falls. niagara (1/4) and lancaster (1/8) drag strips were my second home.
in LA here, the proximity to hifi shops is tremendous but overshadowed imho by the used record market. this could be called record collectors heaven. great music venues too, especially for jazz. the jazz bakery, catalinas, the baked potato (former hangout for grusin, carlton, rit, harvey mason, et al). and many other great spots to see jazz, and ive seen (and missed) some of the greats.
the best jazz station in the country (arguably) is here, kkjz, formerly klon at 88.1 fm and on the net ant kkjz.org (listen on line and join, its an npr station).
i have met a couple of online acquaintances and had some good times. met some industry notables too, bedini, schifter, joe grado, arnie nudell, cary christie, sao win, and john ulrich to name some.
if id done this in buffalo, i may have met dan d'agostino who used to hang there. b+k and magnum dynalab are made there.
im a city boy at heart and have lived and done work on the farms around canton, ohio as a boy. i found that theres no substitute for hard work and that its good four your soul as is being alone in the woods and pastures.
a good number of my best friends have had life transitions or death that took them away from me. i function well as a loner but value true friendship which is quite rare these days.
well, enough for self effacement.
.......regards.....tr
