speakers close to the back wall ?
Regas are a classic near-wall recommendation. The RS7s are on budget new.
DAC to match $2-3K CD player
Thanks again, Kbarkamian. That strikes me as very good advice, especially as I'm very happy with the CD5x (it is my main source; normally, I use the Squeezebox for Pandora or internet radio only). I'm in no hurry to change it.
DAC to match $2-3K CD player
Thanks, Kbarkamian, your suggestions are really helpful. In my very limited experience, I think you're absolutely right about budget DACs. I'm very happy with the CD5x now, but W4S (sooner) and Naim (later) sound like strong contenders. Interestin...
DAC to match $2-3K CD player
Thanks, Tvad, forgot about that one. The only dacs I've heard (enough to have an opinion about them) are the Musical Fidelity V-DAC and Cambridge Audio Dacmagic; no surprise that I wouldn't trade my cd player for either one. Hence my original ques...
DAC to match $2-3K CD player
But the W4S DAC-1 is $995, right? Who's talking about a $5K dac?
DAC to match $2-3K CD player
Thanks, Smholl (and Audiowoman). I've begun ripping my cds, and your description of the W4S dac makes me think that maybe I'm closer to going that route than I thought ...

I don't know anything about the Monarchy Audio NM24, Clio09, will have to check it out.Is the modded PS Audio DL3 a different beast, Jimhsu? In what way? I ask because a friend bought the stock model to replace a Cambridge Audio Dacmagic and ended...
Yet Another Speaker Choice Question
I missed that you have a tube amp and agree with the comments above about Dynaudio and solid state. You'd probably do better with more efficient speakers. Knownothing made some great suggestions. If you want to try a tiny and affordable option, I ...
Yet Another Speaker Choice Question
I have Dynaudio x12s and love them. No hardness on top, and I'd describe the midrange as on the warm side of neutral. (What HiFi rated the x12s more highly than the x16s; you might want to look at the reviews, but my sense was that it had to do wi...
Audiophile Addiction
I'm no audiophile by any stretch of the imagination (and have the system to prove it!), but reading these posts two things occur to me. First (with a nod to Macdadtexas), involving the family can be a great thing; for example, it was my then three...
Musical Fidelity V-Can Headphone Amp
I'd forgotten about the channel imbalance. The usable travel on the volume pot with my AKGs was more like 1/8 turn. They're pretty easy to drive, but those Sennheisers are a 300 ohm load, aren't they?!?
Musical Fidelity V-Can Headphone Amp
I had one briefly and wasn't impressed. The sound quality after a couple of weeks was OK, but the real problem was the gain: the volume went from silence to unbearably loud very quickly. I'm much, much happier with the Creek OBH-11 I picked up to ...
Cambridge Audio S30--try with a nice amp
Thought I'd update this because the S30s are such a bargain. I set them up again in my office, with an old Rega Brio. They really sound fantastic--even on a bookshelf (with the ports bunged).
Got $1000...how should I spend it?
You could do worse than a Quad 99 CDP-2 and Active 12Ls. Closer to 1200 than 1000, but how tight is the leash?!?
