Backert Labs Rhumba preamp
Glad I was helpful, Milpai, and thanks for the nice words as well as for the comprehensive update.  But more importantly I'm glad it worked out so well for you.  Enjoy!  Best regards,-- Al
Is DEQX a game changer?
Sincere condolences on the loss of your friend, Steve. Not moving the speakers to the center of the room for the speaker calibration measurements certainly figures to be a reason the PreMate didn’t provide much improvement. I had pointed out on 9-5...
Did I just make my audio system too sensitive after adding a Herron VTPH-2A preamp?
Slight correction to my previous post:  "247 pf" should have been "267 pf."Regards,-- Al
Did I just make my audio system too sensitive after adding a Herron VTPH-2A preamp?
Gentlemen, as a point of information the AT-ML150/OCC is a moving magnet cartridge, and the 47K input impedance of the Herron’s moving magnet input is correct for it.Also, I believe that the cartridge has not been manufactured for quite a few year...
Is DEQX a game changer?
Thanks for the update, Steve. I’m curious, though, as to why the use of two monoblocks (I assume you meant per channel, in a biamp configuration) would make any difference with respect to the ability of the DEQX to improve the time coherence of th...
Get your First Watt SIT-3 now?
Thanks, Joe (Snopro).  But the SIT-3 wouldn't work for me, as the DEQX HDP-5 I use as my preamp provides essentially zero gain from its analog inputs to its analog outputs.  (And in fact the default positions of some internal jumpers result in neg...
Get your First Watt SIT-3 now?
Lwin, thanks for providing the additional perspective.George (Jetter), I've owned my XA25 for about five months now, and the early impressions you've probably seen me mention in other threads continue to apply.  Basically, I've found Teajay's revi...

Get your First Watt SIT-3 now?
Those considering purchase of a SIT-3 should keep in mind that its gain is only 11.5 db, which is extremely low for a power amp.  Consequently it requires a single-ended input of about 3.2 volts to be driven to its rated maximum power capability o...
Kinki Studio EX-M1
Unity gain means that output voltage equals input voltage, which corresponds to a gain of 1 when expressed as a ratio, or to zero when expressed in db. Mike must have been referring to the gain of some stage within the amp, rather than to the gain...
Recommendations on stuff to look at for upgrading a 300B SET amp
What you are describing is referred to as passive horizontal biamping, JB. "Passive" because an active crossover is not being used to separate high and low frequencies "ahead" of the amps (the passive crossovers in the speakers doing that instead)...
Pass Labs HPA-1
The SIT-3 has extremely low gain for a power amp, the spec being 11.5 db and Stereophile’s measurements indicating 11.3 db. In contrast, most Pass amps (and many others as well) have specified gains of 26 db.Based on the 11.3 db gain it can be cal...
Speaker Cable Malarkey (“Ghost” Cables)
Plot twist: Does this 20 gauge wire that is only connected at the amp need a break-in period? Since that wire would be conducting no current, aside from the infinitesimal amount that might result from antenna effects, it's hard to imagine how any...
Recommendations on stuff to look at for upgrading a 300B SET amp
As a point of information, while I’m not totally certain I believe the LM-805ia is the same amp as the LM-508ia that Shkong78 suggested earlier, and that is owned by at least one other highly respected member here, namely Waltersalas. Perhaps the ...
Speaker Cable Malarkey (“Ghost” Cables)
In addition to the possibilities Teo mentioned, the cable that is disconnected at the speaker end may be acting as an antenna, picking up RF (radio frequency) noise, and injecting it into the feedback loop of the amp, assuming the amp has a feedba...
