Electrostatics and tubes
The Quad ESL (57) has been getting a bad rap for it's bass production for years. The speaker has quite good bass response down to 40 Hz. In most music, that would suffice. If you listen to rap/hip hop, electronic/dance, some of the newer movie sou...
Electrostatics and tubes
Let's clear up something here. Roger's direct drive amplifiers were made for either the Acoustat ESLs (non-hybrids) or his own ESLs. None were made for the Quad ESLs (the voltage was too high). The RM-10 was manufactured during the time Roger owne...
Building Resonance Free Subwoofers
@mijostyn IIRC the Dayton Audio amp that Duke LeJeune recommends for his swarm has a high pass filter but it's fixed at 12 dB per octave. So not very flexible. It's why I decided to use my own active crossover for the swarm I put together.
High Pass Filter for Mains
Same here, used their 3-way active crossover for years. Just recently sold it. I would have no problem buying from them again.
Best amplifier for Acoustat 2+2 electrostats for holographic sound, or change speakers?
@tomic601 agreed those Korg tubes were microphonic in my experience with them B1 as well.
Best amplifier for Acoustat 2+2 electrostats for holographic sound, or change speakers?
I would get rid of the interfaces on those speakers and use a direct drive amp. I have Acoustat Model 2s and did exactly that using the Acoustat Servo amps. Going with a direct drive amp removes the transformers from the equation which can restric...

@bdp24 I believe I do have the only Model 2s that are modded by Roger. My experience with Acoustat came from the fact that Roger had a pair of Xs. He used (actually butchered) the cabinet so that he could test his own ESL panel and power supply. I...

Most of the Acoustat panel speakers can be modified to use the Acoustat servo amps. Roger Modjeski did some mods to my servo amps, but unfortunately he passed away before we could implement the tube input stage. I modded my Model 2s with help from...
Autoformer volume control in an active tube preamp?
Antique Sound Labs Flora EX DT is a tube preamp that uses autoformers for the volume control so it certainly can be done. I toyed with the idea of doing it as substitute for the Kozmo stepped attenuators in my Audio Note Kits Mentor L5 preamp, but...

Fritz Carrera 7 Be and 300B power amp?
I used to do audio shows with Fritz where we used the Carreras and Carbon 7s with a 10 watt 300B SET amplifier. The combination worked just fine in a room that was 12' x 19', and we got it pretty loud, even trying to intentionally clip the amp. Th...
Gallium Nitride GaN Class D Amplifiers
@mapman +1, I also own the Bel Canto REF1000Ms and use them to power my distributed bass array for a bi-amp set up. No shortage of bass there and it's very fast and articulate. When speaker designers of yore were making speakers with 32 and 16 oh...
Gallium Nitride GaN Class D Amplifiers
The Atma-Sphere M-60 always struck me as pleasingly warm in tone, but not syrupy. This is a wonky comparison, though, because I have no idea if the Atma-Sphere GAN amps convey the same house sound. Maybe someone who has heard both will respond. ...
Damping Factor and Overall Negative Feedback.
With regards to damping factor, is 4000+ really necessary? I know a lot of amps push that spec as if the greater the number the better the amp. I am not saying that this is Hegel's strategy because the use of negative feedback in general increases...
Subwoofer speed is in the room, not the box
ESLs will go extremely loud if they do not have to make low bass and they don't have to force an amp to drive a 30 ohm load. @mijostyn that is kind of my point for crossing over as high as possible, but Roger always told me the amp has a say in...
